Proving FAP

Once you can FAP a text, you must prove you are right. You can do this by making a LIST.

Look at:

L - What language does the text use? (Is it persuasive, childish, formal?)
I - What information is included in the text? (Is the text full of fact, opinion or a mixture?)
S - How is the text structured, organised or layed out? (Does it have lots of pictures? Lots of writing? Bullet points?)
T - What tone does the piece have? (How would you read it out loud?)

Task: Find a text online, FAP it and prove it by commenting on either Language, Information, Structure or Tone.

All: Identify the format, audience and purpose of the text.

Most: Prove your idea by explaining the language, information, structure or tone of the text.

Some: Remember that the texts can be complex. Try to be as detailed as possible.

I have completed some examples for you with a little extra advice. Use these as guides if you are unsure. If you need a little extra help  post a question on the discussion board.

Example for ALL:

I have chosen to write about an advert for Harry Potter: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_EC2tmFVNNE

Format: Film Trailor
Audience: Males and females who are 14 plus; people who are already fans of Harry Potter; people who are interested in fantasy and adventure films
Purpose: To persuade people to watch the film.

Hint: Try to be as specific as possible when identifying target audience (think about gender, age, interests, occupation.

Remember to use the vocabulary that we have learnt in lesson when discussing purpose (inform, persuade, describe, advise, analyse, review).

Example for SOME:

I have chosen to write about a printed Tresemme advert from a magazine:
http://bit.ly/cz4IDn

Format: Printed Advert
Audience: Women, housewives, people who enjoy pampering themselves
Purpose: To inform people about the product and persuade them to buy it.

Who do I think this?

Point: What are you going to comment on to prove your idea?

I think the advert is targetted at women because of the style.

Evidence:Either use a quote or describe in as much detail as you can.

For example, the main image is a picture of a woman who looks glamorous after having her hair styled.

Analysis (remember to aim for three stages):

1) Explain one key point.

The woman is beautiful which means people will want to be like her.

2) Choose another key point to explain.

However, she also looks like a woman that you could expect to see walking down the street.

3) Explain the effect on the audience: How will people react? How will this help the purpose?

This suggests that all women can look glamorous if they buy Tresemme products so they will be persuaded to buy them.
